A freshly found feathered dinosaur with 4 wing-like limbs might have lurked the lakeside forests of what is now northwestern China, sliding in between trees like a flying squirrel and nabbing a few of the earliest birds out of the Cretaceous sky.
The predator, called Jian changmaensiswas a close cousin of Velociraptor and came from a weird group of little birdlike dinosaurs called microraptors. Unlike the big and flaky “Jurassic Park” variation of raptors, these animals were feathered, light-weight and moved to navigate. Based upon fossil proof, J. changmaensis had long plumes on both its limbs, providing it the appearance of a small dragon with 4 wings.
