The world would not listen to the apostles. The world would not even listen to Jesus, and it is not likely to listen to us, but it remains our task to preach and proclaim and share the Good News of Jesus Christ. The disciples were groping in the darkness between the cross and the resurrection and that is where the world is today – groping in the dark. People are so helpless now – just as they were then – as sin and evil tower over people and cause tragedy after tragedy. Many feel utterly hopeless and inadequate in the face of the grim facts of sin, and chaos, and man’s inhumanity to man. Men continue to search pathetically for some man-made humanistic solution. Our task is to point them to Jesus Christ, even when they do not want to be pointed to Jesus Christ.

As Jesus touches you – blesses you – speaks to you – heals you – forgives you – feeds you – calls you – follow him, all the way – to Calvary and beyond. Jesus always leads the way – but look where Jesus is going. Jesus knew what was going to happen. Luke tells us he set his face resolutely – 9 verse 51 – to go up to Jerusalem. He is determined and will not be diverted. His mind is fixed firmly. The crisis of the cross looms. It is a pivotal point. The disciples are apprehensive as Jesus explains what he is going to experience. In Mark Chapter 10, Jesus tells us WHY – to give His life as a ransom for many – to buy people back from their fallen lost sinful condition. Jesus had come to save men from their sins – and Jesus knew He came to die. The ‘wise men’ who visited Bethlehem 33 years previously indicated that, by their gifts. This sets Jesus Christ apart from ‘the founder’ of every other religion – or faith community – as we hear mentioned frequently today. Jesus Christ is unique

Be Careful What You Smile About

I am a student of smileology and have been just about all my life. If you can’t smile at something, it’s not worth thinking about. Of course, certain things in life are serious, but not that many. Too many people take everything seriously and ruin their life. These are the kind of people I like to be around because they take things so seriously and because of that, the jokes on them. When I see somebody that looks sad, I have an impulse to try to do something to make them laugh. It is that smile on our face that defines who we are. There are times when I need to be careful about my smiling. I find so much to chuckle about, and to be truthful, the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage has given me quite a bit to chuckle about. I don’t know if she has taught me to chuckle or if I have taught her to chuckle. The result is the only thing that matters. We chuckle together, and that makes a good life. We need to be careful about watching programs dealing with politicians because of the danger of dying laughing.
