A “blood moon” showed up from Earth last night, marking the very first overall lunar eclipse given that 2022.
An overall lunar eclipse takes place when a complete moon passes straight through Earth‘s shadow, casting our world’s natural satellite in a reddish, blood-like color– frequently called a blood moon
Skywatchers throughout the Americas snapped photos of this uncommon phenomenon as the moon finished its lunar stage on Thursday night and into Friday early morning (March 13 to 14).

In North America, one professional photographer recorded the “blood moon” increasing over the Statue of Liberty in New York, while another captured it peaking out of the clouds above the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

The moon is still noticeable throughout this lunar stage since some light from the sun refracts through Earth’s environment and strikes the satellite before showing back to the surface area of our world dealing with the moon. The sun predicts a spectrum of various colors in its light– the 7 colors of the rainbow, plus infrared and ultraviolet light. Particles in Earth’s environment scatter blues and other short-wavelength light, while enabling the longer-wavelength oranges and reds to pass through– comparable to a sundown or daybreak– and then sprinkle onto the moon.
Not every moon leads to a lunar eclipse. The occasion just takes place when the moon is completely lined up behind our world. If that positioning is a little off, then the sun’s light can still straight reach a few of the moon– implying it’s a partial eclipse.
The next overall lunar eclipse will take place on the night of Sept. 7 to 8however it will just show up in western North America. Around this time next year, there will be another blood moon that will show up in all of North America.
